No Worries Mate

There are a lot more constructive things I could write about (I actually have a growing list of stuff), but I occasionally read a post from someone trying to implement GTD that blows my mind… I’m talking about the people who have a to do list like:

  1. Paint my nails
  2. Exercise
  3. Read
  4. Feed the cat

If that is all you have to worry about in a given day and you need a time management system to relieve stress, then you need professional psychiatric help.  When your list of next actions exceeds 500 and conservative time estmates puts it at 3 years of work, then I’ll start to sympathize.

Sorry to pee in anyone’s corn flakes, but maybe if someone tells these people they have nothing to be stressed about, they’ll wake up and realize it.

Tempermental Templates!

Well, I just plopped in a new theme. The old one was pissing me off way too much. I’ve actually had similar problems with several themes… something in a plugin or post will inject some CSS garbage that will throw the whole thing out of whack. I’ve been able to iron out the most of the bugs, but one that I couldn’t figure out is that some posts will cause the sidebar to show up at the bottom of the page. This post is a good example. It seems like there ought to be a sure fire way to make sure no content in a post will bleed CSS gunk to the rest of the page, but I haven’t found it yet. Anyway, this theme fixed my immediate problems. I think I’m going to decide on a layout I really like before I do anymore tinkering with PHP & CSS that I’m just going to throw away.

Getting Thanksgiving Done

Need something to take to a holiday get together? This is a sure fire hit. It may sound kinda weird, but you won’t believe how good it is.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup Italian salad dressing
  • 1 medium green pepper, finely chopped
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 can (2-1/4 ounces) chopped ripe olives, drained
  • 1/3 cup chopped stuffed olives
  • 8 flour tortillas (10 inches)
  • 2-1/4 pounds shaved deli ham

DIRECTIONS

In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, mayonnaise and Italian dressing until smooth. Stir in green pepper, onions and olives. Spread about 1/2 cup over one tortilla. Top with a seventh of the ham. Repeat six times. Top with remaining tortilla. Cover and chill overnight. Cut into wedges.

Yield: 20 servings.

Don’t over-think it!

Here’s some advice that I’ve read on quite a few GTD related blogs recently.  Actually I think it should be the first thing anyone reads before trying to implement their own GTD system.  I know I’ve spent waaaaay to much time messing around with a million tools when I could have been actually getting things done!

What else is empty?

In an article on CNN.com, Bush was asked what he carries in his pockets. Elsewhere (I really should keep track of where I read this stuff) someone commented that the contents of Bush’s pockets was analagous to a saying that “the fewer keys you have, the more power you have” or something like that. I was thinking that the less you have in your pockets, the less you have in your head.

This also reminded me of a cool Flickr tag: what’s in your bag?
